The Lake Merritt Plaza in Oakland sought to expand the use of their outdoor courtyard and provide commuter benefits for bikers. The project required a phased approach for an outdoor retail courtyard and biker amenity room. Phase 1 dealt with the existing structure of the building while trying to provide adequate room for the circulation, repair and storage of bikes, while still providing the comfort of a refreshing shower for those who required it. For Phase 2, the goal was to achieve an inviting and comfortable and canopied courtyard,  where the building storefront's could expand unto and animate the urban fabric while providing a moment of pause in the fast driven 20th street.
