17th street parklet
Parklets have been providing great moments for social encounters in areas that lack them and even transforming the urban fabric itself, while still providing an opportunity for local retail. The fast-driven corridor of 17th street contains a pocket with great natural qualities for a moment of pause in a busy area of Downtown Oakland. This urban pocket benefited from low-rise buildings in a dense mom & pop shop, but felt the discharge from the 980 Interstate. The addition of a protective barrier that provided opportunities for a social node and revenue for local retail shops.
